Annette and Olivette a Novel by Chelse BenhamAnnette and Olivette: A Novel by Chelse Russell-Benham
Annette and Olivette: A Novel
(Book One in the Turquoise Trail Trilogy)

Subtitle/Tagline:
When life unravels, the road to redemption may lead to ruin.

Status: Currently in progress.

Pitch: Welcome to Annette and Olivette, a novel that traces the fault lines of family, secrecy, and redemption along New Mexico’s storied Turquoise Trail.

Teaser: After a single night shatters the fragile balance inside her home, Annette leaves without a plan — only a destination. But the desert has a way of stripping away illusion. As buried grievances surface and long-guarded secrets begin to press against the silence, Annette must confront the possibility that what broke her family wasn’t one moment… but something much older.

Synopsis: Annette and Olivette is a literary novel about family secrecy, motherhood, and the long aftershocks of betrayal. Set between Austin, Santa Fe, and the backroads of New Mexico, the story follows two estranged sisters on a road trip that exposes the fragile architecture of identity and the cost of silence across generations.

The Novel: Annette Morgan Reinhardt has built her life on appearances—a stable marriage, a successful career, and a carefully managed version of herself. When that façade collapses after a single night spirals out of control, she flees her life in Austin and heads west to Santa Fe, where she reunites with her older sister, Olivette.

Olivette lives far from convention: spiritually inclined, bohemian, and quietly burdened by her own unresolved past. Along with Olivette’s irreverent friend Windsong, the three women embark on a journey down New Mexico’s Turquoise Trail, moving through ghost towns, roadside bars, and moments of unexpected vulnerability. Beneath the humor and shared escape, long-suppressed truths press closer.

A psychedelic ceremony in Albuquerque forces the sisters into a reckoning that alters their bond forever. What is revealed does not heal them—it destabilizes everything they thought they knew. At a crossroads, Annette must confront a legacy of silence and self-denial, while Olivette faces the consequences of leading a counterfeit life.

Themes & Concerns: Annette and Olivette explores the interior lives of women navigating midlife rupture, inherited secrecy, and the toxic tension between self-delusion and self-realization. The novel examines motherhood and daughterhood, addiction and denial, identity crisis and spiritual awakening, revealing the myriad ways love and people can bind and betray.

Told with dark humor and psychological intimacy, the book asks whether redemption is possible when the truth arrives too late—or whether facing it is, itself, a form of grace.

Series Context: Annette and Olivette is the first novel in the fully outlined Turquoise Trail Trilogy. Each book in the series stands on its own while contributing to a broader examination of female friendship, family, and personal authenticity.

Subsequent novels shift focus to questions of community: what makes authentic vs. shallow friendships; why women are forced into inherited vs. chosen identities; how women, in all their different roles, remake themselves—and each other— to fit an impossible ideal, sacrificing themselves in the process.

On Form & Adaptation: Drawing on a background in screenwriting and visual storytelling, the novel blends cinematic pacing with interior psychological depth. While Annette and Olivette is conceived as a literary work, its structure and setting reflect a fluency across narrative forms.
